| BASIC INTRODUCTION
Trainer: The trainer should
briefly introduce himself to the attendees, providing a very
brief description of his professional background and qualifications.
The trainer should then invite the attendees
to introduce themselves to the group. Ask them to give a VERY
brief description of their professional background, and to
state what institution they either represent, or work for.
THE GOAL OF THE WORKSHOP
Trainer: The trainer should
then outline the goal of the workshop. This is to:
(i). Explain the reasons for the establishment
of microfinance PESO performance standards.
(ii). Demonstrate how they are calculated.
(iii). Describe what they mean and what they measure.
(iv). Highlight how to interpret the results
(v). Detail how all the guidelines are interconnected.
(vi). Outline how they can be used as a management or oversight
tool by regulators, practitioners, donors, and lenders to
Microfinance Institutions (MFIs/Banks).
OUTLINE OF THE WORKSHOP
Trainer: The Trainer
should now identify how the workshop will be conducted. The
following points should be mentioned:
- This is a participatory workshop. The Trainer is looking
for ideas, participation and feedback from the attendees.
- The workshop is designed for the different modalities
used in the Philippines. While the core topics will be the
same for each modality, the actual presentation will focus
on either co-operatives, or NGOs, or Banks. It will not
mix the three modalities into one workshop. Thus all of
the attendees at, say, the co-operative modality will be
interested in co-operatives, and all attendees at the NGO
modality will be interested in NGOs.
- The workshop is action driven. We will start with an introduction,
then discuss and define the PESO performance standards.
This will be done in conjunction with working our way through
an operational example, to show how the ratios are calculated.
- Each ratio will be discussed, highlighting what it means.
- After completing all the ratios, a score will be computed
for the example MFI/Bank, and its ramifications discussed.
- For the last session there will be a case study, which
will be completed in the workshop, and then will be discussed
by all attendees.
