| The manual
is structured as a training guide for trainers, but also can
be used as a self help guide to actual practitioners.
The text is categorized as to the points
where the trainer makes the presentation of the particular
topic being discussed. The italicized text is addressed to
Trainers and contains suggestions, guidelines, and hints on
conducting the workshop. The points for discussion are laid
out as detailed talking-points in times new roman print, which
the trainer is encouraged to build upon, using his/her own
style of speaking.
Concurrent with the text of the manual
is an operational example that will be used to demonstrate
each aspect of the performance guidelines, so as to give users
examples of how to calculate and interpret the guidelines.
At the end of the sections, there will be a series of short
questions so that the trainer can test the students to ensure
that they have fully comprehended the subject matter that
has been discussed within the module.
To help make the workshop as realistic as
possible, the Trainer should encourage attendees to bring
the financial records and supporting data of their own institutions
to work on during the presentation. This will help them interpret
the academic training to the real world. The results of their
own calculations, however, should not be publicized to the
rest of the attendees.
At the end of the final module, there is
a case study for students to work through. This will enable
students to pull together all aspects of this training course,
by practicing calculating and interpreting the results of
the test score as it relates to the strengths and weaknesses
of the institution itself. Then, they can compare these results
with the sector as a whole.
A key challenge for the trainer is judging
the level of sophistication of the client audience. Some attendees
will be very advanced, whilst others could have only a rudimentary
knowledge of the subject matter. To allow for this, there
will be decision points during some modules, where the client
audience will be asked whether they fully understand the subject
matter in question (e.g. do they understand the concept of
portfolio at risk?) and if yes, the Trainer can skip the next
few paragraphs explaining the concept and focus on the advanced
phase of the topic. If the attendees do not fully understand
the concept, they should work their way through the detailed
discussion before moving on to the advanced phase.
